Overview

This beautiful 17th century historic house is Grade II* listed and regarded as one of the best examples of an oak timber frame house in the whole of Mid Wales.

Talgarth is a stunning cottage bursting with character and original features yet with some modern aspects, such as a newly fitted bathroom with large walk-in shower, roll top baths (three of them!), WiFi and flatscreen TVs. Furnished and decorated with a tasteful combination of antiques and stylish furnishings, the cottage sleeps eight guests in four bedrooms.

The large welcoming kitchen has an oil-fired Aga in the inglenook fireplace (operational in the winter only). Please note the AGA cooker is vintage 1952 and not thermostatically controlled. This means it may not get as hot as a modern oven and may be more suited to an experienced AGA user than a novice. The kitchen is fitted with bespoke oak units, fridge, electric cooker, dishwasher, microwave, Welsh dresser and a breakfast table and chairs for six. A separate utility room houses a washing machine and freezer. The  magnificent triple aspect drawing room has a flatscreen TV, DVD player, antique furniture, original beams and a large open fire. There is a separate library with sofas, armchairs, a log burning stove in the inglenook fireplace, flatscreen TV and plenty of books. The atmospheric dining room has a dining table and chairs to seat eight.

Upstairs are four large bedrooms and three bathrooms, two of which are en suite. On the first floor is a master bedroom with a king size bed, sofa and some antique furniture; the en suite bathroom has oak panelling, rolltop bath, basin and WC. Also on the first floor is a family suite: a double bedroom and a twin bedroom; these are separate rooms, but have an interconnecting door if required by families with small children. The newly-fitted family bathroom has a rolltop bath, large walk-in shower, basin and WC. The fourth bedroom is on the second floor - a double bedroom with some restricted headroom and oak door leading to an en suite bathroom with bath, washbasin and WC.

The property is set in generous grounds, which are fully enclosed, comprising a large gravelled courtyard with plenty of off-road parking, a large lawn with flower borders and a separate cottage garden packed with colour in the summer months. To the front of the property is an authentic knot garden, which provides a perfect setting for the house. There are two barbecues for guests to use (bring your own charcoal) and garden furniture. Guests at Talgarth can also enjoy use of a separate garden room located across the courtyard from the main house. This has sofas, seating, a TV for video and DVDs only, and a dart board. This room is not heated and is intended for summer use. Talgarth is on the corner of two quiet lanes: both are no-through roads, with little passing traffic. The village of Trefeglwys, with its pretty church and a pub which serves food, is within easy walking distance.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF TALGARTH
Meaning: WELSH tal 'end' of the garth 'hill, promontory'  English = END OF THE HILL

A very special Grade II listed historic house - outstanding example of C17 half timbered, storeyed Montgomeryshire house.
The earliest records found record that this area formed a maerdref or bonded settlement. The settlement was attached to the principal court of the commote of Arwystli Uwchcoed based at Talgarth, in the valley of the river Trannon near Trefeglwys, where the lord's main arable lands lay, the historic landscape you see from the house as been cultivated for over 1000 years.
Ieuaf AP OWAIN. Born: Abt 1050, lived here. Ieuaf married Margred VERCH GRUFFUDD, daughter of Gryffydd AP CYNAN the King of Gwynedd (1094-1137).

Hywel (Howel) son of Ieuaf, was born here in about 1095, the only child. He was a War Lord and through treachery got possession of the Castle of Tafalwern from Owain Gwynedd his brother in law, Owain was not too pleased and raised an army, he retook Tafalwern from Hywel, Hywel attacked Owain's forces in Llandinam on the banks of the Severn to regain some of the spoil which Owain was carrying away to Gwynedd, Hywel was defeated and Owain claimed Talgarth and the Awystli as part of his territory. He was disposed by Pjiys ap Gruffydd in 1166, Owain's son Gwenwynwyn retook Talgarth in 1197 after the death of Pjiys.

By the late 1290s Talgarth had become the manorial centre of Arwystli Uwchcoed. The main court was said to have been here.
Arwystli, together with the lordships of Cyfeiliog and Caereinion, were regained by the Cherltons, lords of Powys in 1401, during the Glyndwr uprising from the prominent marcher lord Sir Edmund Mortimer who had formerly seized them. The lordship subsequently passed through the Tiptoft family to the Dudleys who sold the lordships to the Crown during the reign of Henry VIII.

The estate was bequeath to Roger Lloyd a knight of the Royal Oak by King Charles II with a value of £800 per annum, a considerable sum in those days. The house was rebuilt and occupied by the Lloyds' descendants until the Middle of the C19 when it became a farmhouse belonging to the trustees of General Woosnam.

The house was built in around 1664 by Edward Lloyd of Leighton, the first high sheriff of Montgomeryshire a supporter of King Charles II, on the site of the former Manor house which had been destroyed by fire. (Possibly around the time of the Owain Glyndwr uprising in 1401).

The house was listed Grade II* being of particular historical interest in 1952.

The house in its present form dates back to Victorian times when the brick extensions were added, the house was considerably renovated around 1970 and again in the early 2000s.

Reviews

A delight. I love old houses and this was fantastic. Ideal with dogs as secure enclosed large garden and courtyard. Easy base for both beaches and walks such as Cader Idris. Will be returning to this area next year.Mrs Hill - 31st August 2016

We've had a wonderful time at Talgarth. It's a great family home with space for all to do their own thing or to congregate around the kitchen table. Many thanksSusan P - 24th May 2014
This is without a doubt the most beautifully presented, well-equipped holiday homes we have stayed in. We have loved every minute. Thank you so much for allowing dogs - we have a retired racing greyhound and days like today when we walked up to the source of the Severn and watching her sheer joy in being alive are what it's all about for us (and she loves the fire!). It has been the perfect week. Thank you.Tim - 16th November 2013

We very much enjoyed our stay at Talgarth. It was a pleasure to stay in such a beautiful house.Smith Family - 1st April 2013
The house has a lovely feel with enough room for all 6 of us to spread out. It is well equipped with everything you could possibly need. The collection of books was fascinating. The dogs had ample room to chase each other in the courtyard and gardens while we were confident that they could not escape. The location was also ideal, we were able to take the dogs for walks directly from the house and also take them farther afield in cars. We visited Welshpool, Machynlleth and, of course, Llanidloes and Caersws.Davies Family - 1st February 2013
